Problematic – Vol. 1 by Ladii nesha

This is my third read by Ladii Nesha, and let’s just say she is officially three for three. The title speaks for itself because everybody in this book was problematic in one way or another. This is for readers who enjoy stepping out of the fantasy world for a second and diving into something that feels a little more real. Toxic love, emotional damage, messy decisions… yeah, all of that lives here. But what I appreciated most was that beneath all the chaos, there’s still a story about knowing your worth and figuring out when enough is enough.

Even though this was a slow burn, Ladii Nesha did an amazing job setting the foundation for what feels like it’s going to be a really good series. The world-building, the connections between characters, and all the mess slowly unfolding? Yeah… she definitely knew what she was doing.

Now let’s get into these characters because whew.

Tyler is one of those characters who looks like she has it all together on the surface, but underneath? Completely drowning. After losing some of the most important parts of herself at a young age, Tyler learned how to survive because she didn’t have the space to heal. And honestly, that survival mode shaped every decision she made after that.

From the outside looking in, Tyler was living the kind of life people dream about. Fancy cars, sections, money, drugs, high-rise condos, and the man. But people love glorifying what looks good without paying attention to what’s quietly destroying somebody behind closed doors. Nobody really stopped to acknowledge the sacrifices Tyler made just to keep herself afloat. Nobody saw the demons beating her down daily, or maybe they did and simply chose to ignore them. And the man she carried around like a prize? That man was the devil wrapped in expensive packaging, which was solely provided by my girl Tyler.

Then there’s Logic.

Logic never really got the chance to be young. Becoming responsible for his three younger siblings at sixteen because of his problematic mama forced him to grow up fast. He was robbing, scheming, hustling, and doing whatever he had to do to make sure his siblings never lacked anything. Sometimes survival will have you making decisions you never imagined making.

Still, Logic had a vision for his life. With the help of his best friend Al, he was slowly working toward something bigger while trying to carry the weight of everybody around him. But of course, the moment life starts looking halfway decent, here comes the chaos ready to shake everything up.

And somehow, Tyler and Logic were always meant to collide, no pun intended.

Logic’s calm and level-headed demeanor was completely different from Tyler’s aggressive and self-destructive nature. He wasn’t soft by any means, but he also wasn’t chaotic just for the sake of being chaotic. Logic knew exactly what he wanted, and surprisingly, Tyler became part of that picture pretty quickly. The real question is whether Tyler is capable of showing up for somebody when she’s still emotionally, mentally, and physically tied to the devil himself.

Now Tyler stressed me OUT.

Everybody has vices, so trust me, I understand struggling with certain things. But Tyler had me wanting to scream “STAND UP” more times than I can count. Watching her continuously crave the addiction that was orchestrated by her no-good aunt, cousin, and man was frustrating in the most realistic way possible. Addiction is designed to break you down until you feel like you can’t function without the very thing destroying you, and that mint can had Tyler in a chokehold.

While Tyler was battling her addictions and inner demons, Logic was busy fighting everybody else. Between Tyler’s man and the sudden return of his mama after disappearing for eight years, my boy could not catch a break. And whew… that woman came back opening doors that should’ve stayed shut.

But I will say this, Logic might be one of the first male characters in a long time that didn’t completely piss me off. He knew what he wanted, he stood on it, and he wasn’t playing games when it came to Tyler. However, I am curious to see whether Logic can truly handle Tyler and the can of worms that Pepper has opened.

There’s honestly so much more I want to unpack, but I refuse to spoil this book more than I already have. Just know the moment I realized Ladii Nesha was leaving us with a cliffhanger, I got real irritated. But honestly, she did exactly what she was supposed to do because now I need the next book immediately.

Ladii Nesha definitely left her readers feigning for more, and I can’t wait to dive back into the mess Detroit clearly still has waiting for us.
